TROUBLESHOOTING

incomplete coverage

Why is my image coverage incomplete?

ONE INSTANT has done its best to "hack" the peel-apart system, but the reality is that many of the component we use were never intended for this format. Namely the pods, which were designed for the legendary 20x24” Polaroid cameras. That being said, with a trusted camera and good pulling technique (see our PRO TIP on PULLING) , you will almost always get coverage of 80% or more and typically much better. If you suspect your film had faulty pods, please take pictures of the print and pod, and write to us at techsupport@one-instant.com

faulty exposure

My photo appears to have been exposed to light - what happened?

Although we've designed it as well as we know how, ONE INSTANT cartridges should be considered light-resistant, not light-proof. Never store cartridges outside of their protective bag (or a suitable box) until you are ready to load it in your camera. When loading, do it in the lowest available light, taking care not to let the sun or bright light shine directly into the opening. With a bit of experience, it's easy to eliminate light leaks, even when shooting outside on a sunny day.

image layer peeled off

When removing the adhesive parts from my photo, some of the image layer peeled off - how can I avoid this?

Slow and steady wins the race! Please check out our PRO TIP article on PEELING for an in-depth discussion on how to avoid this sticky situation.

splotchy image

Why does my photograph have weird colors or surface texture?

There are several anomalies that can happen with peel-apart film. If you have a hazy, matte texture on your print, or a strong stain covering some portion of the photo, check out our PRO TIP article on WASHING, and this might help.

In other situations, roller cleanliness can have a surprisingly dramatic effect on overall image quality. Even if they appear to be clean, dried goo on the rollers or axles will often introduce pressure marks, mottling, and poor coverage. Whenever faced with nagging image issues, start by thoroughly cleaning your rollers.

We recommend wiping down your rollers with a dry cloth after every ONE INSTANT shot and using a wet cloth for a deeper clean at the end of every photo session. Some roller mechanisms can be removed from the camera and fully submerged under running water for the best possible clean.

Learning how to safely take apart the roller mechanism to clean it is an important task for any packfilm enthusiast. Be careful, work slowly, and consult online guides if you have your doubts. We recommend this video by AwesomeCameras.

white spots

Why are there are tiny white dots on my photo?

This can be caused by pulling out the processing tab too quickly, introducing bubbles into the processing goo. There's no advantage to pulling too quickly. The best strategy is to pull straight, with the processing tab centered, in one fluid motion, and at a moderate speed. Check out our PRO TIP on PULLING for more in-depth information.

weird image

The black paper connected to the print is wrinkled/folded/broken and there was poor contact between negative & print, resulting in a very weird image - what happened?

If the processing tab is not pulled out straight and centered, the processing insert can catch on the roller mechanism and come out of the camera damaged or badly aligned. This will result in poor contact and registration between the negative & print. Sometimes this gives interesting results! Other times, not so much. The best practice is to set the camera down flat on its back and pull the processing tab out as straight and as centered as possible. For the best possible guidance we can give, read through our PRO TIP on PULLING.

roller cleaning

Why is there goo in my camera?

Some amount of goo in your rollers after shooting ONE INSTANT is practically inevitable. Please refer above to the information about roller cleaning under “Why does my photograph have weird colors or surface texture?”

NOTE: The processing reagent (a.k.a. goo) is highly alkaline and prolonged skin contact will cause irritation and chemical burning. Always wash thoroughly with water after touching goo! Contact with your EYES should be avoided at all costs! If the processing reagent gets into your eyes, continuously flush them with lukewarm tap water for at least 20 minutes and consult a medical professional afterwards.
